Getting Started
Congratulations on taking the first step towards a once in a lifetime international experience through the ASU International Programs Office (IPO)! The steps below will help guide you through the process of choosing and applying to an IPO study abroad or exchange program, so get started and good luck!
1. Attend a Study Abroad 101 information session. This is the first step toward making your international experience a reality. In this session we will cover the basic information that all of our students need to know, including how to choose a program, earning credits on your program, financial aid and scholarships.
2. Think about the goals you would like to achieve while abroad. Consider the following: What classes would you like to take? When would you like to go abroad during your college career? Do you have a particular destination in mind? What is your financial budget? Would you like to learn a new language? In what kind of living accommodations would you feel most comfortable? After prioritizing these aspects, start to explore all the opportunities!
3. Choose from the wealth of program options available to you in the following three categories:
- ASU Exchange Programs: Reciprocal agreements between ASU and an international institution provide for an equal exchange of students. In an Exchange Program, ASU students pay ASU tuition, are assigned ASU course equivalencies for the work they do abroad, and the grades earned are factored into their ASU GPAs. Participants will be responsible for paying for flights, housing, books, food, travel, etc. in addition to their regular ASU tuition. Students will most likely be in regular university classes, and not in special classes designed for foreigners.
- ASU Study Abroad Programs: As opposed to ASU Exchange Programs, participants in an ASU Study Abroad Program DO NOT pay ASU tuition. Instead they pay a program fee, which includes tuition and MAY include additional perks like housing, food, and some excursions. There are not usually a limited number of spots. ASU Study Abroad Programs may have more student support than Exchange Programs, and participants may be in classes specifically designed for foreigners.
- ASU Internship Abroad Programs: ASU students interested in completing an internship overseas can do so by participating in an ASU Internship Abroad Program. Participants can earn ASU credit by participating in these programs. Similar to ASU Study Abroad Programs, participants DO NOT pay ASU tuition. Instead they pay a program fee, which includes tuition and MAY include additional perks like housing and some excursions. Most programs require participants to take courses in addition to the internship.
4. Once you have attended a Study Abroad 101 information session, you are encouraged to Make an Appointment with an IPO Program Coordinator. This is a great way to address any questions you might still have and to receive more detailed information about any IPO program.
5. Once you have met with an IPO Program Coordinator and decided on a program, you are ready to begin the Application Process.
