Accommodation in Tempe
On-campus housing (dormitory)
Currently, all exchange students who apply to the IPO for housing are placed in the Adelphi II Commons Dormitory. Adelphi is privately managed, but it offers many of the same amenities of the ASU campus housing. Be sure to read the information available on the Adelphi Commons II website at Adelphi Commons II.
All exchange students applying for ASU housing should download and complete the Adelphi Commons II housing application. The application is available through your ASUbound account. You must submit the application directly to Adelphi. Housing is assigned on a first come, first served basis. If you are only coming to ASU for the fall or spring semester, Adelphi does offer a one semester contract for exchange students. If you are coming to ASU for the full year, you will be required to sign a housing agreement that covers both fall and spring. You cannot spend your first semester in the on-campus housing and the second in an apartment. Please note that you will be allowed to move in to the dorm the day prior to your orientation, not the date stated on the housing application. This is arranged with Adelphi for all exchange students.
When making the decision to live in the dormitory, consider:
- You will have pre-arranged housing on campus supervised by on-site staff who maintain order and security.
- You will have access to housing no more than a few days before orientation and a few days after the end of your program.
- You will have to pay a security deposit up-front which you should get back at the end of your lease if there is no damage.
- You will live with a roommate and share a bathroom with one neighboring room.
- You will have a fixed cost for the semester or year and can take advantage of a payment plan and pay by credit card.
- You will have access to a shared kitchen, laundry facilities, and common room with a television.
- Your room will be furnished with a loftable bed, desk, desk chair, and 3-drawer chest. You must provide linens.
- Adelphi II Commons rates include electricity, water/sewer, water heating, cable TV, basic phone and internet connection.
- Adelphi II Commons does not close during academic breaks. You are welcome to stay in your room throughout the lease term.
- If you are coming to ASU for only one semester, living in Adelphi may be a better option for you. Securing a apartment for only 4-5 months is very difficult.
Off-campus housing (apartments, rooms for rent, dormitory)
Living off-campus means finding one's own apartment, or an apartment to share with other exchange students. You may also consider renting a room in someone's private home or apartment.
IPO does not make off-campus housing arrangements for you, but we offer resources and basic advice about finding off-campus housing.
To begin, consult The Center for Off-Campus & Commuter Student Services: http://www.asu.edu/studentaffairs/reslife/occss.html. OCCSS provides programs and services to meet the requests of off-campus and commuter students and to address the needs of persons wishing to live and connect in the Arizona State University quarter and neighboring community. Specifically, OCCSS has a great resource for locating off-campus housing: housing information for each campus.
You may also want to look at the website for the Associated Students of Arizona State University,(ASASU) which has some information on off-campus housing: http://asasu.net/.
Before signing a lease, you should also read about legal issues related to housing at: http://www.asu.edu/mu/legal/landlord.htm.

When making the decision to live off-campus, consider:
- You will have housing during winter break.
- You may have access to housing earlier than the day before orientation.
- You may have to pay a large security deposit up-front (which you should get back at the end of your lease if there is no damage).
- You may have more privacy.
- It may be more economical, depending on how many roommates you have.
- You will have a private kitchen.
- You may be able to rent apartments which are already furnished.
- Although you can make arrangements from abroad, you may want to come to ASU a few days or a week before orientation to view apartments in person before committing.
- If you are coming to ASU for the Academic Year, living off-campus may be a better option for you.
